Infrared Heaters - Fast Home Heating and Energy Efficient Heaters - Image via Wikipedia
What exactly is infrared heat? Are infrared heaters efficient to use? Let’s answer these questions and more about infrared heating.
Let’s examine what exactly infrared heat is. Infrared heating is the transfer of thermal energy in the form of electromagnetic waves. One common characteristic is that the transfer of heat is emitted or radiated from the heated object or substance. The source emits radiation at a peak wavelength towards an object. This object can absorb the radiation at some wavelength, reflect radiation at other wavelengths and re-radiate wavelengths. The absorbed radiation is what creates the heat within the object.
An infrared heater is an object with a higher temperature that transfers energy to a body with a lower temperature through electromagnetic radiation. Most of these heaters are built using the emission of a flame or an electrically heated filament as the emitting body.
Most heaters warm the air in a room. Anyone in the room is warmed by the air. By heating in this manner, a person does not feel the benefits of the heater immediately. Infrared heaters do not heat up the air; they heat the objects that are directly in their paths. As a result of this, people in the area of the heater are warmed directly by the heater and not by the air. This principle makes infrared heaters very energy efficient. Another advantage is that you don’t have to turn the heater on half an hour or hour in advance to pre-heat the room. The warmth is felt immediately.
Some of the most popular types of infrared heaters are: metal-sheathed tubular heaters, quartz tubes, quartz lamps, gas fired catalytic, flat-faced panels and ceramic emitters.
There is no need to worry whether or not infrared heaters are safe. Most of the these heaters today have a protective sheath to cover the heating elements. The cover is usually made of a metal like aluminum, brass, copper, iron or stainless steel.
There are indoor heaters as well as outdoor and patio heaters. These heaters can run off of propane, electricity or natural gas.
Infrared heaters can be a great addition to any house heating system. They are efficient and produce heat immediately. Although these heaters may be a little more expensive than the regular heaters, with their energy efficiencies, it could save you money in the future.
